4 Tips for Self-Care After Giving Birth

  • Susie Parker

Motherhood means a big adjustment, and it’s not always easy to get right into the swing of things after you have your baby. You want to become the best mother you can for your child, but you have to take proper care of yourself to do that. We offer some tips for self-care after giving birth and starting your life as a new mother.

Get Enough Sleep

Your body and mind went through a lot, and now you have a new baby that needs your attention throughout most of the day and night. Exhaustion is one of the biggest problems for new mothers, which means it’s important to get plenty of rest. Some mothers do this by sleeping whenever their baby sleeps, so they can have a more restful day once the baby awakes. Others, however, will use nap time to get things done and choose to sleep only at night. Whatever you do, make sure you give yourself and your body the sleep and recovery time you need.

Try a New Wardrobe

Pregnancy changes your body in many ways, and it takes a while for you to heal and adjust back to your new normal. After your baby comes, don’t pressure yourself to return to your pre-pregnancy weight right away. You don’t want to stay in your ill-fitting maternity clothes, either. The solution? Find new clothes that fit your current body. You’ll look better—and feel better—and you can get an affordable new wardrobe from thrift stores or resale shops. You can also look into postpartum compression garments designed to help provide comfort and support for your body as it heals.

Spend Time Outside

It’s never easy to leave your baby alone—or find the time to take a break—but you should try to make a point of getting outside once in a while. Once your doctor clears you for physical activity, leave your newborn in the care of your partner or a sitter and go for a walk around the neighborhood. If you get the chance to go out with friends or family, make sure you get at least a few minutes in the fresh air.

It Takes a Village

Parenthood isn’t something you should have to do alone; one of the biggest tips we have for self-care after giving birth is to create a support system. Don’t let fear make you refuse or not ask for help from family or friends. Have someone else watch your baby, so you can take a nap. Let others bring you meals so that you can take a break. Even a friend coming over to sit and talk for a while can immensely benefit your overall wellbeing. Plus, this means your baby will get to meet all the loved ones who will be in their life.
